Known as the “Theatre of the Wild,” Tsavo East is famous for its vast open landscapes, red-dust elephants, and the Yatta Plateau—the world’s longest lava flow. It’s the best place for spotting large herds of animals in a raw, untamed setting.

4.67Visiting Tsavo was one of the highlights of my trip to Kenya. Coming from Italy, I had dreamed of an African safari for years, and Tsavo delivered everything I hoped for and more.
We started in Tsavo East, where the vast open plains and the sight of elephants covered in red dust felt surreal. The landscapes were wide and wild, very different from anything I had seen in Europe. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, explaining not only about the animals but also the history and conservation work happening in the park.
Tsavo West offered a completely different experience, with volcanic hills, lush vegetation, and Mzima Springs—where I was amazed to watch hippos and crocodiles through the underwater viewing chamber. The contrast between the two parks was fascinating: East felt raw and expansive, while West was greener and more dramatic.
What impressed me most was the authenticity. Tsavo is not overcrowded with tourists, so the encounters with wildlife felt personal and untouched. Every game drive felt like an adventure, and seeing lions, giraffes, and herds of elephants against such varied backdrops was unforgettable.
I would highly recommend Tsavo to anyone visiting Kenya. It’s a perfect blend of adventure, scenery, and wildlife, and it gave me a true sense of being in the heart of Africa.
